A comprehensive 15-night and 16-day overland Bhutan journey beginning and ending in Phuentsholing. The route crosses western, central and eastern Bhutan, covering Thimphu, Punakha, Trongsa, Bumthang, Mongar, Trashigang, Phobjikha, Wangdue and Paro. It combines dzongs, sacred temples, museums, village experiences, weaving traditions, mountain valleys, wildlife landscapes and the Tiger's Nest trek.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Arrival in Phuentsholing — Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang & Local Market

    Arrive in Phuentsholing, Bhutan's principal southern border town. Complete all required immigration, entry permit and document formalities according to the prevailing regulations. Processing time may vary based on nationality, office hours, crowd levels and document verification. Meet the local representative and transfer to the hotel. After check-in and rest, visit Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, a peaceful temple located near the town centre. Follow temple etiquette and photography rules. Later, walk through the local market area to experience the lively border-town atmosphere. Browse shops, observe Bhutanese streetscapes or spend time at a café. Overnight stay in Phuentsholing.

  2. Day 2 — Phuentsholing — Permit Formalities & Local Sightseeing

    The day is set aside for the Bhutan entry permit and any remaining document formalities, which are completed at the immigration office in Phuentsholing. Processing time varies with nationality, office hours, crowd levels and document verification, so the day is deliberately kept flexible and no fixed programme is set against it. Time remaining after the formalities may be used for the town and the country immediately above it according to the confirmed programme — the hillside monastery overlooking the valley, the riverside area, or the market streets that run along the border. Return to the hotel and spend the second overnight in Phuentsholing.

  3. Day 3 — Phuentsholing — Thimphu — Tashichho Dzong & Memorial Chorten

    After breakfast, check out and begin the drive north to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. The road climbs steadily out of the foothills through forested ridges, roadside settlements and long valley views; conditions change with weather, roadworks and convoy traffic. On arrival, visit Tashichho Dzong, the fortress-monastery that houses the throne room and the offices of state — visiting hours depend on official functions and are usually limited to the later part of the day. Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, circumambulated by local worshippers from early morning until night. Follow dress-code and photography rules at both. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Thimphu.

  4. Day 4 — Thimphu — Buddha Dordenma, Museums & Takin Preserve

    After breakfast, visit Buddha Dordenma, the giant seated Buddha overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Enjoy panoramic views of the capital, subject to weather and visibility. Continue to the National Textile Museum and Folk Heritage Museum to learn about Bhutanese weaving, traditional dress, rural life, household culture and local customs. Later, visit Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan's national animal. Follow all visitor rules and avoid feeding or disturbing the animals. The remaining time may be used for local markets, handicraft shopping or a relaxed walk through the city centre. Return to the hotel and spend the second overnight in Thimphu.

  5. Day 5 — Thimphu — Dochula Pass — Punakha Dzong

    After breakfast, check out and drive east over Dochula Pass, where one hundred and eight memorial chortens stand together on the ridge. On a clear morning the pass opens onto the eastern Himalaya, but cloud is common and visibility cannot be guaranteed. Descend through changing forest into the warmer Punakha valley. On arrival, visit Punakha Dzong, built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and among the most photographed buildings in the country; access depends on official functions, religious events and visitor arrangements. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Punakha.

  6. Day 6 — Punakha — Trongsa — Trongsa Dzong & Ta Dzong

    After breakfast, check out and begin the scenic drive to Trongsa. The route passes forested valleys, mountain settlements and winding roads. On arrival, visit Trongsa Dzong, one of Bhutan's largest and most historically significant fortress complexes. Continue to Ta Dzong, an old watchtower converted into a museum with views across the dzong and valley. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Trongsa.

  7. Day 7 — Trongsa — Bumthang — Jakar Dzong & Kurje Lhakhang

    After breakfast, check out and continue towards Bumthang, Bhutan's cultural and spiritual heartland. The road crosses forested mountain terrain and traditional settlements. On arrival, visit Jakar Dzong, which overlooks the Bumthang Valley. Continue to Kurje Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's most sacred pilgrimage sites and associated with Guru Rinpoche. Transfer to the hotel and check in. Overnight stay in Bumthang.

  8. Day 8 — Bumthang — Jambay Lhakhang, Mebar Tsho & Tamshing Lhakhang

    After breakfast, visit Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples. Continue to Mebar Tsho, also known as the Burning Lake, a sacred site located along a rocky river gorge. Visitors must remain within marked safe areas because the rocks and river edge can be slippery and dangerous. Later, visit Tamshing Lhakhang, known for its sacred murals, religious art and connection with Pema Lingpa. Depending on time, take a relaxed walk through the valley or explore nearby villages and local craft outlets. Return to the hotel and spend the second overnight in Bumthang.

  9. Day 9 — Bumthang — Mongar — Mongar Dzong

    After breakfast, check out for one of the longest drives of the circuit, crossing into eastern Bhutan over Thrumshingla Pass. The road descends through deep forest and cliff-side sections with repeated changes in altitude and temperature, and the day should be treated as a travelling one; timings depend entirely on road and weather conditions. On arrival, visit Mongar Dzong, unusual among Bhutan's fortresses in having been built in the twentieth century, though to the traditional design and without drawings or nails. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Mongar.

  10. Day 10 — Mongar — Trashigang — Trashigang Dzong & Market

    After breakfast, check out and drive towards Trashigang, the largest urban centre in eastern Bhutan. The route passes steep valleys, mountain roads and rural landscapes. On arrival, visit Trashigang Dzong, a fortress overlooking the surrounding valleys. Access depends on official functions and visitor arrangements. Later, explore Trashigang's local markets and streets to observe daily life in eastern Bhutan. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Trashigang.

  11. Day 11 — Trashigang — Radhi Village & Shamdrak Monastery

    After breakfast, proceed towards Radhi Village, known for traditional weaving and hand-woven textiles. Observe local craftsmanship respectfully and ask permission before photographing residents or workshops. Continue to Shamdrak Monastery, located on a hill and offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The access road and walking requirement depend on local conditions. Later, visit an important gompa or spiritual site near Trashigang according to local access and the confirmed programme. Temple timings and religious events may affect visitor entry. Return to Trashigang and spend the second overnight at the hotel.

  12. Day 12 — Trashigang — Phobjikha Valley — Gangtey Monastery

    After breakfast, check out and begin the long return drive west across the country towards the Phobjikha valley. This is a full travelling day over mountain roads and departure is usually early; timings depend on road and weather conditions and the programme for the day may be shortened to protect the drive. On arrival in the glacial valley, visit Gangtey Monastery, which looks out over the open wetland below. The valley is the winter roosting ground of the black-necked crane, present only between the late autumn and the early spring months. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Phobjikha.

  13. Day 13 — Phobjikha — Wangdue Phodrang

    After breakfast, check out and continue towards Wangdue Phodrang. The route passes forested valleys, farmland and mountain settlements. Visit Wangdue Dzong, subject to current accessibility, restoration status and official visitor arrangements. The site offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Later, explore Wangdue market and interact respectfully with local shopkeepers and residents. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Wangdue.

  14. Day 14 — Wangdue — Paro — Drukgyel Dzong & Kyichu Lhakhang

    After breakfast, check out and drive towards Paro through mountain valleys and forested roads. On arrival, visit Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress associated with Bhutan's defence history. Clear weather may offer views towards Mount Jhomolhari, but visibility cannot be guaranteed. Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples. Follow dress-code and photography restrictions. Check in at the hotel and stay overnight in Paro.

  15. Day 15 — Paro — Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) & National Museum

    After an early breakfast, drive to the Taktsang trailhead and begin the hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery. The trail climbs through pine forest, prayer flags and mountain viewpoints. The hike is moderate to strenuous depending on fitness, altitude, weather and pace. Rest at the cafeteria viewpoint before continuing through the final stair sections. Visit the permitted temples and follow all security, dress-code and photography rules. Horse service may be available for part of the uphill route at direct cost, but the final approach requires walking. After descending, visit the National Museum of Bhutan to explore exhibits on the country's history, art, religion and culture. Return to the hotel and spend the second overnight in Paro.

  16. Day 16 — Paro — Phuentsholing — Departure

    After breakfast, check out and drive from Paro back down to Phuentsholing on the southern border. The road runs down to Chuzom and follows the Wang Chhu south through the forested foothills; timings depend on road and weather conditions, so any onward travel should allow for the full drive. On arrival, complete any required exit formalities and transfer to the confirmed border point, vehicle terminal or onward departure location. The complete Bhutan east–west overland circuit concludes in Phuentsholing.
