The Malaysian capital, where the Petronas Twin Towers stand over colonial shophouses, temple lanes and some of the best shopping in Asia. The rest of the day is free to settle in.   2. Day 2 — Kuala Lumpur: Petronas Twin Towers and the KLCC Park fountain show

    Breakfast at the hotel. A full day in Kuala Lumpur — the Petronas Twin Towers and the KLCC Park fountain show; Batu Caves and its 272 painted steps to the Murugan shrine; and Merdeka Square, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Masjid Jamek.   3. Day 3 — Kuala Lumpur to Malacca

    Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Leave for Malacca — a 150 km, two-hour run down the North-South Expressway. The old port of the Melaka Sultanate — a Dutch red square, Portuguese ruins and the antique shops of Jonker Street. Check in on arrival and, as the day allows, the Dutch Square, Christ Church and the Stadthuys. Overnight in Malacca.

  4. Day 4 — Malacca: A Famosa gate and the ruins of St Paul Church

    Breakfast at the hotel. A full day in Malacca — the A Famosa gate and the ruins of St Paul Church; a Melaka river cruise past the painted riverside houses; and Jonker Street and its weekend night market. The evening is free for dinner and a walk on your own. Overnight in Malacca.

The closest sea to Kuala Lumpur — a calm strait, an ostrich farm and the Cape Rachado lighthouse on its headland. Check in on arrival and, as the day allows, the Blue Lagoon and Teluk Kemang beach.
