Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Kathgodam / Haldwani — Kainchi Dham — Jageshwar — Pithoragarh

The pilgrimage begins early from Kathgodam or Haldwani, where the group meets the tour representative and boards the assigned mountain vehicle. After a short briefing regarding the route, weather, luggage and high-altitude precautions, begin the scenic drive into the Kumaon Himalayas. The first important halt is Kainchi Dham, the renowned Neem Karoli Baba Ashram surrounded by forested hills. Spend time at the temple complex for darshan and quiet prayer before continuing through the winding mountain roads. Proceed towards the Golu Devta Temple, dedicated to the revered deity of justice in Kumaon. Devotees may offer prayers and observe the thousands of bells and written petitions associated with the temple. Continue towards Jageshwar Dham, an ancient cluster of stone temples dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva. The temples are set amid tall deodar trees and offer a peaceful introduction to the spiritual character of the journey. Depending on traffic, weather and available time, visit the main Jageshwar temple complex and nearby shrines. After completing the temple visits, continue to Pithoragarh through valleys, pine forests and mountain settlements. On arrival, check in at the hotel, have dinner and rest. The first day involves a long mountain drive, so travellers should hydrate well and sleep early in preparation for the restricted-border sector ahead.

    Overnight: Pithoragarh

  2. Day 2 — Pithoragarh — Dharchula — Permit Formalities — Nabi / Gunji

After an early breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive towards Dharchula, the important border town located beside the Kali River. The road passes through deep valleys, terraced fields, mountain villages and sections overlooking the river that forms part of the India–Nepal border. On reaching Dharchula, complete the required Inner Line Permit verification and documentation formalities. Travellers must keep original identity documents, permit copies and passport-size photographs readily available. Depending on the operating arrangement, luggage may be reorganised before entering the restricted high-altitude sector. Only essential baggage should be carried forward because accommodation and vehicle space are limited. After the formalities, transfer to locally authorised mountain jeeps and begin the drive towards Nabi or Gunji. The route becomes narrower and more adventurous, passing through dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and remote villages such as Chialekh, Garbyang and Nepalchu. Short halts may be taken for permit checks, tea, photography and acclimatisation, depending on daylight and road movement. Arrive at Nabi or Gunji by evening and check in at the assigned homestay or guesthouse. Facilities in this region are basic and rooms are generally provided on sharing basis. Enjoy a simple hot vegetarian dinner, meet the local support team and attend a briefing for the next day's Adi Kailash excursion. Travellers should rest adequately, avoid unnecessary exertion and immediately report headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness.

    Overnight: Nabi / Gunji

  3. Day 3 — Nabi / Gunji — Jyolingkong — Parvati Sarovar — Adi Kailash Darshan

Wake up early and prepare for the most important day of the pilgrimage. After breakfast, carry only essential items such as water, dry fruits, personal medicines, rain protection, warm layers and identity documents. Travel by local mountain jeep towards Jyolingkong, situated at approximately 4,762 metres above sea level. The route offers views of high Himalayan terrain, glacial streams, rocky valleys and snow-covered peaks. Vehicle movement is dependent on the condition of the track, weather and instructions from local authorities. On reaching the permitted vehicle point, begin the trek towards Parvati Sarovar, also known as Gauri Kund, and the Adi Kailash Temple area. The walking distance is approximately 3-4 kilometres one way, though the effort can feel considerably greater because of altitude, cold wind and uneven terrain. Walk slowly, remain with the group and avoid rushing. The mountain guide and support team will assist with pacing and safety. Depending on weather and visibility, receive the sacred darshan of Adi Kailash and spend time at Parvati Sarovar for prayer, meditation and photography. Visit the Adi Kailash Temple area and perform prayers according to local tradition. The time available at the site may be limited because of changing weather and the need to return before dark. Begin the trek back to the jeep point and return to Gunji or Nabi. On arrival at the homestay, have a warm dinner and rest. This is the most physically demanding day of the itinerary. Travellers experiencing persistent altitude symptoms must inform the guide immediately and follow medical or descent instructions without delay.

    Overnight: Gunji / Nabi

  4. Day 4 — Nabi / Gunji — Om Parvat — Kalapani — Vyas Gufa — Dharchula

After an early breakfast, depart by authorised local jeep towards the Om Parvat viewpoint. The sacred mountain is known for a natural snow formation resembling the symbol 'ॐ'. Clear darshan depends entirely on weather, snowfall, cloud cover and visibility, so the operating team may adjust the departure time to improve the chances of viewing the mountain. Proceed through the remote upper valley towards Kalapani. Visit the Kali Temple and spend time at the sacred surroundings associated with the origin region of the Kali River. Continue to Vyas Gufa, traditionally linked with Maharishi Ved Vyas. The guide will explain the religious importance of the area and the role of the route in the historic Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. After completing the darshan and visits, begin the long return journey towards Dharchula. The route descends through Gunji, Nabi and the border valleys. Permit checks, road work or landslides may cause delays, and meal or tea halts will be taken according to operational convenience. Reach Dharchula by evening or night and check in at the hotel. Enjoy dinner and rest after completing the restricted high-altitude section. Travellers should reorganise their baggage and keep any permit documents safely for the remainder of the tour.

    Overnight: Dharchula

  5. Day 5 — Dharchula — Kumaon Valleys — Patal Bhubaneswar

After breakfast, check out from the Dharchula hotel and begin the journey towards Patal Bhubaneswar. The road passes through traditional Kumaoni settlements, forested ridges, river valleys and terraced agricultural landscapes. This day provides a gradual return from the restricted high-altitude region to the lower Kumaon hills. Comfort breaks and meal halts may be taken en route depending on road movement. On arrival at Patal Bhubaneswar, check in at the hotel or resort. If time, temple schedule and physical condition permit, proceed to the Patal Bhubaneswar cave temple. The sacred limestone cave is reached by descending a narrow pathway with steps and support chains. The cave contains naturally formed rock structures associated in local tradition with Hindu deities and mythological stories. Entry may not be suitable for travellers with severe mobility, respiratory or claustrophobia-related concerns. Follow the temple guide's instructions and avoid carrying bulky bags inside. After darshan, return to the accommodation for dinner and overnight rest. In case of late arrival, the cave visit may be shifted or shortened according to local temple timings.

    Overnight: Patal Bhubaneswar

  6. Day 6 — Patal Bhubaneswar — Kathgodam / Lalkuan Departure

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and begin the return drive towards Kathgodam or Lalkuan. Travel through scenic Kumaon valleys, pine-covered slopes, small hill towns and rural settlements. The return journey is long, and the departure train or onward transport should be booked with a sufficient buffer for mountain-road delays. Comfort and refreshment stops will be taken according to the group's progress and road conditions. On reaching Kathgodam or Lalkuan, the driver and tour representative will assist with the final drop at the railway station or confirmed departure point. The Adi Kailash and Om Parvat Yatra concludes with the blessings of Lord Shiva and memories of the remote Kumaon Himalayas. Guests are advised to retain their permit documents and medical records until the journey is fully completed.
