Day by day
- Day 1 — Dehradun — Rishikesh Arrival & Acclimatisation
Begin the journey from Dehradun, where the driver or tour representative meets the group at the agreed pickup point. Board the private vehicle and proceed towards Rishikesh. The short first-day drive is intentionally planned to provide a relaxed beginning before the longer mountain journey to Chopta. On arrival in Rishikesh, check in at the reserved hotel and settle into the room. The rest of the day is available for leisure and light acclimatisation. Guests may explore nearby riverside markets, visit an accessible Ganga ghat or take a peaceful walk along the riverbank, depending on hotel location and available time. Avoid an overly tiring sightseeing programme because the following day involves a long drive into the Garhwal Himalayas. Use the evening to organise warm clothing, trekking shoes, rain protection, personal medicines and a small day backpack for the upcoming trail days. Return to the hotel for an early dinner and overnight stay. Guests arriving late will proceed directly to check-in and dinner according to the hotel schedule.
Overnight: Rishikesh
- Day 2 — Rishikesh — Devprayag — Srinagar — Rudraprayag — Chopta
After breakfast, check out from the Rishikesh hotel and begin the scenic drive towards Chopta. Follow the mountain route through Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganga. A short halt may be taken at a safe viewpoint according to traffic and available time. Continue through Srinagar and Rudraprayag, following river valleys and gradually gaining altitude. The landscape changes from busy pilgrimage towns to quieter mountain settlements, forested slopes and conifer-covered ridges. Tea, lunch and comfort breaks may be taken en route at the travellers' own expense. As the vehicle approaches Chopta, temperatures begin to fall and the road enters dense forest and alpine meadow country. Arrive by afternoon or evening and check in at the selected lodge or mountain retreat. Accommodation in Chopta is generally simpler than city hotels, and electricity, heating, mobile signal and hot-water availability may be limited. Spend the evening relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. Subject to daylight and weather, take a short walk near the property and enjoy the meadow or forest views. The trek coordinator or driver will reconfirm the following morning's reporting time, weather, trail condition and required gear. Have dinner and rest early. Night temperatures can fall sharply, especially during winter, spring and after rainfall, so layered clothing is essential.
Overnight: Chopta
- Day 3 — Tungnath Temple & Chandrashila Summit Trek
Wake up early for the main trekking day. After breakfast or a packed meal according to the departure schedule, travel a short distance to the trek base. The recommended early start improves the chances of clear mountain views and allows sufficient daylight for a safe return. Begin the ascent towards Tungnath on a stone-paved trail passing through open meadows, rhododendron groves and wide valley viewpoints. The climb is steady and gains considerable altitude. Walk at a comfortable pace, take regular hydration breaks and avoid racing ahead of the group. During snow conditions, the path may be slippery and require trekking poles, gaiters, microspikes or local guide assistance. Reach Tungnath Temple at approximately 3,680 metres. The temple is revered as the world's highest Shiva temple and forms part of the Panch Kedar tradition. Temple access and darshan depend on seasonal opening, snow conditions and local administration. When the temple is closed, travellers may still visit the exterior area if the route is safely accessible. After a short rest, physically fit participants may continue towards Chandrashila summit at approximately 4,000 metres. This final section is steeper and more demanding than the Tungnath trail. Participation should be decided according to weather, snow, fitness and the guide's advice. Guests who do not wish to continue may wait at a safe designated point. From Chandrashila, clear conditions may reveal a wide Himalayan panorama including Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath Dome and Bandarpunch. Views cannot be guaranteed because cloud, snowfall and haze can change quickly. Begin the descent with caution, as downhill walking can be strenuous on the knees and slippery in wet or snowy conditions. Return to the trek base and transfer back to the Chopta property. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is reserved for rest and recovery. Subject to weather and property rules, enjoy a bonfire or stargazing atmosphere before dinner. Overnight stay in Chopta.
Overnight: Chopta
- Day 4 — Chopta — Sari Village — Deoria Tal Trek — Rishikesh
After breakfast, check out from the Chopta property and drive towards Sari Village, the starting point of the Deoria Tal trail. Carry a small backpack with water, snacks, rain protection and personal medicines. Larger luggage remains secured in the vehicle. Begin the gradual uphill walk from Sari Village. The well-defined trail passes through village surroundings, oak and rhododendron forest and occasional open viewpoints. Although shorter than the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek, the route still involves sustained climbing and uneven steps. Arrive at Deoria Tal, a peaceful high-altitude lake surrounded by forest. On clear and calm days, the water may reflect the Chaukhamba massif, creating one of the region's best-known mountain views. Spend time walking around the permitted lake area, resting, taking photographs and enjoying the quiet surroundings. Visitors must avoid littering, entering restricted zones or disturbing the lake environment. Any local entry fee, camera charge or forest fee is payable directly unless specifically included. Weather and wind may affect reflections and mountain visibility. After the visit, descend carefully to Sari Village and rejoin the vehicle. Continue by road towards Rishikesh through the Garhwal mountain route. The combined trekking and driving programme makes this a long day, and arrival time may vary considerably. On reaching Rishikesh, check in at the hotel, have dinner and rest. The evening is generally kept free due to the late arrival and physical activity completed during the day.
Overnight: Rishikesh
- Day 5 — Rishikesh — Dehradun Departure
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and begin the return drive from Rishikesh to Dehradun. The departure time will be coordinated according to the onward train, flight or local drop requirement. On arrival in Dehradun, receive the final drop at the agreed railway station, airport, hotel or city location. The Chopta Mini Switzerland Trail concludes with memories of Tungnath, Chandrashila, Deoria Tal and the alpine landscapes of Garhwal. Guests should keep a reasonable buffer before onward travel because traffic between Rishikesh and Dehradun may vary, particularly on weekends, holidays and pilgrimage dates.
